Because we all know: a change story only works if it resonates. If people understand it, feel it, and start using their own words to describe it. Not when it\u2019s locked in a boardroom document \u2014 but when it pops up in lunch conversations, sticks in a team meeting, or is shared by a manager with conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>TL;DR Change starts with a story<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Every change starts with an idea \u2014 a new strategy, a different direction. But whether it truly takes hold depends on how the story is told. A strong change story isn\u2019t a \u201cnice to have\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s essential.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>After reading this blog, you\u2019ll know:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Why your change effort needs a good story<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The five essential elements of a change story<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>How to use the Minto Pyramid model<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Who to involve in shaping the story<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>And how storytelling helps you bring it to life<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why stories matter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine your colleagues hearing that \u201cwe need to become more agile\u201d or that \u201cwe expect more ownership.\u201d What does that mean for them? &nbsp;Why now? What\u2019s going to change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without context, people disconnect. They\u2019ll make up their own version \u2014 or resist. A strong story helps people understand what\u2019s happening <em>and<\/em> connect to it. It turns abstract plans into something meaningful: into images, emotions, and action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good change story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gives direction<\/strong> \u2013 Where are we going?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gives meaning<\/strong> \u2013 Why are we doing this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Creates connection<\/strong> \u2013 Who\u2019s involved, and what\u2019s your role?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drives action<\/strong> \u2013 How can you contribute?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why we forget to tell the story<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Researcher Bennebroek Gravenhorst observed that leaders often ask themselves all the right questions at the beginning of a change \u2014 but by the time others start asking those same questions, the leaders have already moved on. The answers feel obvious to them by then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why creating a change story is so important \u2014 it helps those early adopters reconnect with the mindset of those who still have questions. You\u2019ll find more on this in his book <em>The Change Accelerator<\/em> (<em>De Veranderversneller<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The five building blocks of a change story<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re sharing it in a speech, a memo, or a set of visuals \u2014 every powerful change story answers five core questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. What do we stand for?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with where you come from. What\u2019s the mission of your organization? What have you learned so far? Change doesn\u2019t come out of nowhere \u2014 it builds on the past. Acknowledging that past gives your story depth and credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Why are we changing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What triggered this change? What external or internal developments are forcing us to move? Why isn\u2019t the old way working anymore?<br>Answering these questions adds urgency and relevance. Include facts, examples, and signals from outside the organization to show this isn\u2019t just an internal shift, but a response to the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. What are we changing toward?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the goal? What are we aiming for \u2014 for our customers, citizens, the community, or the organization as a whole?<br>This is where Simon Sinek\u2019s Golden Circle can help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with <strong>Why<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain <strong>How<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then describe <strong>What<\/strong> will change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. What\u2019s actually going to change?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make it concrete. What will people see or feel? What behaviors, processes, or structures will change? And most importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does that mean for employees?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do roles shift? Are new skills needed?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who will be most affected \u2014 and how will they be supported?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, be clear about your <strong>change approach<\/strong>. Are you running a classic project, inviting participation, or aiming for a learning organization? (Tip: use Caluw\u00e9 &amp; Vermaak\u2019s color thinking model for this.) One more thing: honor what worked in the past. Change doesn\u2019t mean the old way was wrong \u2014 just that it no longer fits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. How are we supporting our people?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally: how are you helping people adapt? What support can they expect \u2014 training, coaching, communication? Is there room for feedback, questions, or concerns?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great change story is empathetic. It doesn\u2019t just end with a strong closing sentence \u2014 it opens up a conversation. It invites dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two ways to structure your story<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main ways to structure a change story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. The narrative route: A journey story<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the classic storytelling approach, using elements we all recognize from movies and books:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A main character with a challenge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A journey full of obstacles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A turning point<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A new perspective or solution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach appeals to emotion and is ideal for changes around <strong>culture, behavior, or collaboration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. The pyramid structure: clear and logical<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For more rational or technical changes \u2014 think IT rollouts or process improvements \u2014 the <strong>Minto Pyramid Principle<\/strong> works well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with your core message<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Back it up with three key arguments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support those with facts, data, and examples<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes your story clear, structured, and persuasive \u2014 no fluff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonus tip: AI tools like ChatGPT can help you draft a first version of your story based on these elements. It won\u2019t give you the final version, but it\u2019s a great starting point to edit and personalize further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Co-creating the story<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A change story shouldn\u2019t be written solo. Start with the change team or steering group to outline the core message. Then bring in communication advisors <strong>and<\/strong> employees. Host listening sessions, interviews, or workshops. Ask: \u201cWhat does this change mean to you?\u201d Use their input. Their words and examples will make the story more real, relatable, and credible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Telling (and listening to) the story<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your story is ready, the real work begins: it needs to be told \u2014 and heard. That only works if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It fits the person telling it (team lead, influencer, director)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It matches the audience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It includes real examples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s shared at the right time, in the right way<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Train your internal storytellers. Let them practice and adapt the story to their style. Leadership is key here \u2014 people don\u2019t just listen to what you say, but watch what you do. And give employees space to share their own version of the story. That builds ownership and strengthens connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The story as a foundation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A good change story isn\u2019t just a nice poster or video \u2014 it\u2019s the foundation for your entire change strategy. It brings focus, meaning, and momentum. So whether you\u2019re guiding a small team change or an organization-wide transformation: <strong>invest in your story. <\/strong>Because change without a story&#8230; usually stays just a plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to get started?
